If you need to write selection criteria examples for the first time it can be a very very daunting process. Even if you’ve done it before it’s always a challenge. So, here are some examples that might help you through this process.
Capacity to be an effective, reliable, flexible and motivated member of a customer services team:
I believe I am a person who is easy to approach, can form good working relationships and am dependable when dealing with colleagues, partners and the public. I am a non-judgemental person; I understand the importance of listening to others and highly value different opinions. I also feel that I can communicate openly, honestly and consistently while working in a team environment. I am fully aware that happy, considerate staff members produce a great working team. I am happy to adjust to working conditions and I have no issues with prioritising work loads and fully understand that tasks can be changed from time to time.
Ability to maintain systematic and accurate administrative records in a confidential environment:
I have always respected the need for confidentiality in any environment and fully understand the absolute importance of that in the workforce and especially in a position such as this. I encourage confidence through fair treatment of others and I am also much focused and have good organisational skills. I feel I am very responsible and aim to respond to each individual’s needs in a professional manner. As I am constantly looking to improve my skills in the workplace I will look forward to any challenges and changes in roles and tasks.
An understanding of the customer service requirements of the position and a demonstrated record of strong commitment and achievement in meeting customer needs:
I understand the importance of the customer service requirements for this position and the need to be focused in order to assist in any inquiries and concerns the community may have. I am very committed to these roles and tasks, especially helping the public.
Demonstrated commitment to a customer service culture and delivery of high quality – Team-based service:
I enjoy the role of working in the library and try my absolute best to assist the patrons whenever they need help making sure I am fully focused and understand exactly what they are asking of me and the services the library provides. When required I involve other colleagues so we, as a team can find the best possible way to fulfil the patron’s needs. I try my best to make sure the patrons leave the library with satisfaction.
I respect the various cultural backgrounds and aim to respond to every individual needs in a professional manner. As I am constantly looking to improve my skills in the workplace I will look forward to any challenges and changes in roles and tasks.
Ability to communicate at all levels and ages groups.
As part of the Cultural services unit it is an important skill to be able to communicate with a wide range of different cultures, backgrounds and various ages such as juvenile children and young adults.
In my experience of dealing with library patrons, I have learnt to ask a lot of questions which can be helpful when communicating of both members of staff and the community and how to be able to deal with difficult situations calmly, effectively and efficiently. When working in the library as a team with other colleagues and using my customer service skills to assist the library patrons, I feel confident in public relations, therefore, I am able to help the patrons more thoroughly. I feel that my friendly nature enables me to communicate with patrons and has helped the patrons and myself feel comfortable and appreciated.
Ability to work unsupervised and under pressure:
Many times during my previous employment I was left unsupervised having tasks delegated to me whilst managing staff and customer enquiries and I feel I am quite capable of working independently. There were also several occasions when I had to be prepared to work in stressful situations and learn to act calmly towards customers and members of staff.
Resilience:
Perseveres to achieve goals, even in the face of obstacles; copes effectively with setbacks and disappointments; remains calm and in control under pressure; accepts constructive criticism in an objective manner. I always strive to convey a positive attitude in the workplace and manage any inconveniences as they come. During my previous employment I was able to learn how to deal with difficult situations in a calm and helpful way without it affecting my working conditions. I also think I am an open-minded person and am willing to accept any constructive criticism to improve my working abilities.

Should selection criteria be addressed on a seperate page entitled “summary of employment” or should it be apart of the covering letter ?
